Christian Williams Review – Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4 Spyder

Christian Williams is Virgin Radio’s breakfast presenter, a regular on the London scene alongside celebrity and presenter friends and one of the UK’s biggest ‘petrol heads’. Christian loves to test drive the latest new fast cars, courtesy of car brands across the UK who kindly indulge his passion. Last week he was lucky enough to enjoy the British heat wave in the brand new Lamborghini Huracán LP610-4 Spyder and has reviewed the car exclusively for Men Style Fashion.

The sound of the V10 engine is a beautiful thing, and when you cut the roof off an already incredible car, the noise in the cabin from the 5.2lt V10 in the Huracán Spyder is sublime. Some things get better with age – fine wine, cheese, my Dad would say himself – and it’s no different from the Huracán range. Every addition to this already sterling line up seems to get better and better.

Love at First Sight

It started in 2013 when Lamborghini launched the Huracán, a 4-wheel drive supercar with the looks Lambo are known for. As soon as I saw the Coupe version I fell in love. Yes, yes, I know the Aventador is as mad as ever but I felt swamped in that car and scared actually to even drive it. The Huracán however seemed to fit like a glove, but a glove I’d already worn and got to love. It was the same feeling I actually got when I first got into a MK1 Mazda MX5. It’s very easy to drive and makes you feel like a superhero the whole time you’re in it!

This new Spyder version is one of the best convertibles I’ve been in. The reason? It makes that 602HP engine seem like it’s strapped directly to your back and the sound…. It’s truly addictive!

Sun’s Out: Top Speeds with the Top Down

I could quite easily do 0 to 60mph runs in that car all day long. There’s nothing like screaming your way to the redline with the wind in your hair on a sunny day watching the distance come towards you at a rate of knots.

In the past, if you cut the roof of a car it’s not just a load of metal you took away. The handling characteristics of the vehicle changed a lot. It became bendy and… well… rubbish really.

Engineers worked hard on this new Huracán spyder though, it’s actually 60% stiffer than it’s predecessor, the Gallardo Spyder. I would be lying if I said I could tell any difference between the Coupe and the Spyder other than the fact I needed to bring a comb with me in the convertible Spyder.

It’s a tad heavier than the Coupe, 122kg more to be precise, but that’s like a home cooked Sunday roast for me so it’s not really a game changer. It can still hit 200mph with, says Lamborghini, the roof up or down! Crazy, and I want to try it. 0-62mph takes 3.4 seconds, only .2 of a second slower than the Coupe.

If you’re a huge show off like me then you’ll be pleased to know that the electric folding roof comes down in 17 seconds and you can do that up to a speed of 30mph.

If it takes you longer than 5 minutes to sort your hair in the morning you’ll also be pleased to know that it’s really quite well refined inside with the roof down at speed. It’s all thanks to a little controllable window on the rear of the cabin, coupled with two removable fins that sit by you and your passenger’s ear creating quite a nice little pod to be in.

A Smoother Ride

I’m not going to lie though, there were two things I was worried about when driving this for the first time…

Ride quality was first on my list, but it turns out I had nothing to worry about. Yes, it’s hard but it’s not back-breaking going over a lump in the road. I had to play around with the lumber support for a bit to get that right but after that it was smooth sailing.

Second was the deal breaker for me, had they sorted the understeer you got in the first generation Huracán? Answer, yes, yes they had.

It’s still not going to slide around like it’s rear wheel drive ‘510-2’ model brother but it’s more neutral now giving you even more confidence when driving. That coupled with the fantastic carbon-ceramic brakes and one of the best seven speed gearboxes I have driven makes it a fantastic package.

All in all, it drives as well as it looks. Now I just need to find £205,000.
