Suits - How To Tell If Your Suit Fits

Suits – How To Tell If Your Suit Fits?

The ongoing problem with buying your suit ‘off the peg’ is the fit. We look at top tips to tell whether your suit fits properly, or if it is time to invest in a new, well fitting one.

  • Shoulder pads should end with your shoulders. You do not want to go out looking like Joan Collins in Dynasty, especially if you are a man in a smart workplace.
  • With a flat hand, slip it into your suit under the lapels where the top or middle button is fastened. This should be easy and your hand should just slip in. If you put your hand into a fist, the suit should pull at the button.
  • With your arms at your sides, your knuckles should be even with the bottom of your jacket. If the jacket is too long it tends to be obvious, especially from the back and you end up being engulfed by your jacket.
  • Between a quarter and a half inch of shirt cuff should be visible. Much more, and you end up looking silly. It is just enough to give an idea and a sneak peak, not so much that half your arm is on display.
  • Jacket sleeves should fall where the base of your thumb meets your wrist. If they are far longer, your arms look shorter than they actually are, sleeves get dirty far sooner and you have to continuously push your sleeves up your arms to do anything without them getting in the way.

Many of these tips become apparent when you buy a suit from a general retailer. Though if you choose to buy a bespoke suit, it will be cut to fit your body.
