Shopping For Holiday Gifts On A Budget Thu, 30 Nov 2017 02:29:00 +0000 Christmas décor lines the shelves at local stores, temperatures are dipping, and advent calendars are ready to go. Holiday shopping can be enjoyable for some, while others find it stress-inducing—oftentimes thanks to skyrocketing prices. If you’re on a strict budget and want to keep costs low this holiday season, keep these tips in mind as you head out to shop.

Create a Detailed Budget

You can’t stay on budget if you don’t have one. Use budgeting app Mint to create a detailed view of the money you can spend this holiday season. With a specific number in mind, you can avoid the holiday spending hangover.

Make a Shopping List

Create a master list of all the people you need to buy for: family members and friends that you exchange gifts with every year. Don’t forget to consider the add-on presents that tend to come up during the holiday season, like hostess gifts for the holiday parties on your agenda and white elephant gifts for the office exchange. Next to each gift recipient’s name, write out a specified budget for the gift. Further breaking down your spending plans this way can save you a lot of money in the long run. Don’t forget to bring your list with you as you head to the mall. With a list on hand, you can take advantage of any deals that pop up during your shopping adventures, and help you avoid buying all of your gifts at the last minute.

Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute

Don’t wait until Christmas Eve to start your holiday shopping. Spend the weeks leading up to Christmas wisely. The sooner you have your gifts purchased and wrapped, the better you’ll feel. A last-minute rush may see you ignoring your budgetary concerns in favor of speed, so start early.

Get Rewards for Your Spending

You’ll do a great deal of shopping this holiday season, so make sure you’re getting rewards from your credit card. If you don’t already have a card that offers spending benefits, check out the Chase Sapphire Card.

Take Advantage of Free Gift Wrapping

If you’re shopping at department stores that offer free gift wrapping, wait a few extra minutes and have your presents wrapped up and ready to go. Don’t waste money buying rolls of wrapping paper that you won’t use, and save yourself from the hazard of paper cuts.

Keep Shipping Costs in Mind When Online Shopping

It might seem like online shopping offers better prices, but you have to factor in the cost of shipping your presents (and consider how long it’ll take for these gifts to be delivered). Take note of delivery fees or shipping costs to avoid any unsavory surprises.

Take Advantage of Discounts and Coupons

There’s no limit to the discounts and coupons available around the holiday season. If you’re looking for fashion gifts, take advantage of Burlington Coat Factory coupons to find something stylish for everyone on your shopping list. If you’re searching for gadgets that don’t break the bank, shop

Re-Gifting Isn’t Off-Limits

If you received gifts last year that remain unopened or unused, consider re-gifting these presents. Have an unworn watch that you know your cousin would appreciate? Wrap it up and gift it this Christmas Eve. It’s not the money spent—it’s the thought that counts.

Consider Homemade Gifts

If you want to keep costs low, consider gifting your loved ones with homemade presents. Consider your skills; do you make a mean salsa that friends and family go crazy over? Spend a Saturday cooking up a big batch of your salsa recipe, and place it in individual mason jars. If you’re feeling extra festive, you can create a jar label and adhere it for a specialized touch that your loved ones will appreciate.

Sexual Harassment – Why Men Need To Speak Out Tue, 31 Oct 2017 07:14:53 +0000 Is Sexual Harassment just a woman thing? Can this happen to a man too?

Yes, men can be sexually harassed, assaulted or raped.  This could happen to gay or straight men, and is not related to your sexuality.  You can be sexually assaulted by a male or a female.  It’s important to understand that this doesn’t mean you are weak.  Often men feel like they should be able to stop it because they are male, however the shock and level of violence or threat of violence means that stopping a sexual assault or rape is extremely difficult.  Sexual assault and rape is about the abuse of power.  It is never your fault and the police will take it seriously.  People who harass or abuse others are often very insecure, have suffered similar abuse and find a sense of self-esteem and self-worth when they try control others.  Unreported abuse leaves the abuser the opportunity to offend again and it is everyone’s responsibility to put a stop to it, as hard as that may be. Unfortunately abusers don’t always feel guilt or shame for what they have done, some will feel that it is their right, others will easily justify their behaviour, play down the incident without taking full responsibility for the affects of their actions, and others will be acting under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Sexual Harassment Constitutes Any Unwelcome Behaviour Of A Sexual Nature.

Hundreds of men have taken to Reddit to share their disturbing stories of sexual harassment – from inappropriate comments in the workplace from female co-workers, to being groped on the dancefloor.  A quick view of Reddit immediately brought up “Found out my rapist is hosting events themed around consent”. WHAT CAN YOU DO?  Make sure you treat it seriously the bottom line is it’s unacceptable ok …..END OF!

Talk to someone you trust.

Its important to air your feelings and allow yourself, it might be a shock incident or something that’s gone on a while but now its changed into something more serious speaking to another person helps you to recognise the impact its had on you and allows some one else to support you through the difficult challenge you are facing.

Keep a Diary

Note down all the behaviour that offends you, the dates, times and location where the behaviour took place and if there were any other people present, keep a record of their names.  This will help you if you need to make an official complaint or report the incident to the Police.

What if it continues or is happening at work?

Once you’ve confronted the perpetrator, if the behaviour continues you need to tell your employer.  Many employers have a procedure – follow it.  Your employer should investigate your complaint and deal with it. You have the right to take someone with you to any meetings about your complaint. They can back you up if necessary.  Once again, keep a written record of everything that happens.

When and why should I take my case to a tribunal?

Employment Tribunals are external committees who assess whether employers have acted unlawfully and seek to resolve the problem.  You should go to a tribunal if: The harassment continues after you’ve told the perpetrator to stop and you’ve reported it to your employer. The harasser owns the company and there’s no-one else to complain to.  If you are not happy with the way the investigation was handled and/or you are not satisfied with the outcome. It’s important to remember you must file your complaint and there may be time limits as to when your complaint must be filed from when the incident took place.

Get Professional Help

Any sort of harassment is just as serious as sexual harassment and could take the form of bullying, racial, prejudice, financial, or other inappropriate behavior.  It might be within the work place or an outside situation so you may need to speak to a Doctor, the police, the employer, and so on, try to find someone who is experienced and can document your findings and suggest the next step.

Let Go of Shame And Guilt!

Remember to take the advice you would give someone else, often we don’t do that.  Looking after yourself must take priority.  Analysing events over and over, wishing you had acted differently or said something different is a negative and unproductive process.  I am sure you did the best you could and thought was right so don’t punish yourself further!  Be kind to yourself. Perpetrators often have issues of their own and need help, but the bottom line is, whatever’s going on for them their behaviour is unacceptable! Having healthy boundaries and saying NO is essential in moving forward and remember it’s not your fault!  Living with guilt and shame is detrimental to your whole being and in this world of equality men deserve the same respect as women.

Finally, counselling or coaching can give you huge support in dealing with the  process and moving forward, harbouring resentment and anger is not good for anyone’s health and prevents you from moving forward.

This season, school is everything but.

It’s bunking class in favour of shredding at the skate park with your mates. It’s cramming everything in your ruck sack because you don’t know where you’re staying tonight. It’s layering up to dress down. It’s joggers for a big night out or a long day’s recovery. It’s day glow hoodies that stand out as much as you do. It’s waking up with a sore head that can be covered with a cap.

It’s a black jacket that says you’re down for anything. It’s turning his hoodie into a dress because you secretly like it more. It’s marching to your own beat with oversized pockets and bold badging. What It Means To Be Stylish Online Wed, 19 Jul 2017 08:05:40 +0000 As we spend and share more and more of our lives on social media, the way in which we present ourselves online is increasingly becoming a matter of style. In the following article, we’ll explore just what it means to be stylish online.

With the ever-increasing importance of social media in our daily lives, being stylish is no longer simply a matter of dressing well, it’s also a question of effectively using social media to convey an impression of our real selves. We receive up to 80 per cent of all sensory impressions through our eyes, which in part explains why users on Facebook are more likely to interact with an image than a chunk of text. In fashion, as on Facebook, a picture really is worth a thousand words.

When we create an online profile, we’re presenting the world with a version of ourselves. How we present our digital selves determines at least in part other people’s perception of us. We’re all aware of the signals we send with our Facebook profile pictures – or should be – and employers really do check potential employees’ social media profiles.

Presentation Is Key

Increasingly, companies and start-ups are offering services that reflect the importance of our digital selves and how we wished to be perceived online. There are a variety of services out there that cover everything to do with online presentation, from reputation management to private photoshopping services. Today, dedicated followers of online fashion can even get their own vanity URLs – the digital equivalent of a personalised number plate.

Instagram, for instance, is a medium that absolutely depends on presentation. The difference between a bad Instagram post and a good one is simply a matter of aesthetics and, as we’ve said before, the best Instagram users know this and understand how to best present themselves. On Instagram, users filter, frame, and edit images of themselves to create and curate stylish online versions of themselves.

Lucky In Love

If fashion is partly a matter of making ourselves attractive to others then Tinder is perhaps the ultimate test of online style. With the potential love of your life or at least a casual hook up at stake, stylish presentation in the app’s condensed digital form counts for a lot. The contradictory dynamics of online dating have long been around, but Tinder has concentrated them even further into four compressed photos, a short bio, and swiping. Users are both physically near to one another, yet remote; potentially recognisable, but – with an easy swipe – also instantly forgettable. Of course, given that we’re talking about aesthetics, what one user finds attractive may not apply to the rest.

Summer, Sun & Fun! Tomorrow Berlin Fashion Week.

A post shared by André Hamann (@andrehamann) on

To be stylish online, you need not only the right clothes and a sense of style, but to also understand the aesthetics of social media. Whether you do it yourself or enlist the services of a professional, it pays to exercise some style online. As we edit, filter, and frame images, we exert control over the way we’re perceived and that’s what it really comes to down to.

Edward Enninful – New Editor of British Vogue Mon, 01 May 2017 08:05:39 +0000 Last week, Edward Enninful was confirmed as the new editor of British Vogue. Condé Nast International chairman and chief executive Jonathan Newhouse announced Alexandra Shulman’s successor, calling Enninful “an influential figure in the communities of fashion, Hollywood and music which shape the cultural zeitgeist”, adding that “by virtue of his talent and experience, Edward is supremely prepared to assume the responsibility of British Vogue.”

“Edward is an exceptionally talented stylist who will no doubt bring an exciting new creative aesthetic to the magazine,” said Shulman today. “Every Vogue editor arrives with their own range of talents and experience and Edward is very known, respected and liked within the fashion industry. I look forward to finding out his plans as soon as possible and working with him over the next few months of transition so that British Vogue continues to be the leading magazine in this market.”

The Seven Deadly Sins of Edward Enninful

Enninful´s right to this golden chalice has been cemented by decades of visually decadent, highly acclaimed editorial extravaganzas. Here we take a look back at his most recent showstopper.

Nick Knight and SHOWstudio have collaborated with Beats to present The Seven Deadly Sins of Edward Enninful, a film which plays tribute to 25 years of fashion by the acclaimed stylist. The concept features the seven classical sins, seven colours, and seven sounds alongside eight top models (with the sin of gluttony demanding two). The short film is a celebration of both Enninful’s renowned career and the increasing interaction between fashion and music. It stars Kate Moss, Lara Stone, Karen Elson, Naomi Campbell, Karlie Kloss, Maria Carla Boscono, Jourdan Dunn and Anna Ewers alongside clothing specially selected by Enninful.

A spectrum of designers are featured; from established labels such as Yohji Yamamoto, Alexander McQueen, Prada, Céline and Maison Margiela to emerging international talents such as Vetements and Marques Almeida.

¨Right now, fashion appears to be having an increasing multi-media presence and doesn´t seem to be having a negative impact ¨ – Nick Knight

Top 100 Mens Fashion And Style Blogs on the Web

The soundtrack was personally selected by Beats with a view to initiating artists who they believe represent the future of music. With songs featured by New Level by A$AP Ferg [ft. Future], Have Mercy by Eryn Allen Kane, Girl by The Internet [ft. Kaytranada], Bout the Business by Hopsin, Sticky Drama by Oneohtrix Point Never, Bury Me by Brodinski ft. Maluca & Bricc Baby Shitro and Gosh by Jamie XX. The film also features Travis Scott providing the narration.

Ghanaian-born Enninful spent his childhood in London where, aged 16, he was model-scouted and his fashion career began. Not long afterwards, he made the acquaintance of i-D founders Trish and Terry Jones and started assisting the publication, becoming the youngest ever fashion director for an international publication when he was promoted not long after, aged 18. His career to date has seen him work for Italian Vogue, American Vogue and most recently W Magazine, as well as consult on countless high-fashion campaigns.

While the fashion industry has long recognised his talent (he was awarded the Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator at the 2014 British Fashion Awards, one of many plaudits), the British monarchy has also acknowledged his contribution to fashion, making him OBE – Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire – last October. “Today is one of the most special days of my life. It is an absolute honour and a dream come true to be given the chance to edit Vogue and I look forward to taking the magazine into a new and exciting future.¨

Ten Apps Every Modern Man Should Have On His Phone Thu, 13 Apr 2017 08:24:32 +0000 Your phone matters just as much to your style as any other accessory, but when the leading phones are determined virtually before they even become available to buy, a little more personalisation can go a long way. Your choice of an iPhone colour may not define you, but the apps that you carry around on your smart device most definitely can – or they can at least make your life a heck of a lot easier! Today, we present ten apps that cast definition aside, and are simply great additions to any mobile device for any modern man!

1. Guides by Lonely Planet

The truly modern man needs to be in more than one place at any one time, taking in the culture, experiencing local events or, unfortunately, sometimes even travelling for work. Nobody wants to feel like a stranger when they reach their destination and Lonely Planet has been the home of the local lowdown for longer than iPhones have been available. They are still going strong as the definitive way to feel like you have been anywhere before, and most of their guides are free into the bargain too!

2. 7 Minute Workout Challenge

Some men spend the whole of winter in the gym, getting ready for summer. For most modern men, however, anything more than the basics for keeping in shape is out of the question. Many fitness apps have come and gone on the various app stores, but one that continues to stick around is 7 Minute Workout Challenge. Put simply, if you have time to read this feature, you have time to get in what amounts to a very decent workout using this app, and the only slight downside is a small initial investment – although we feel that it is worth every penny.

3. William Hill Casino

The casino is still one of the most stylish places that you can be, and we probably have James Bond to thank for much of the allure. With the William Hill Casino app, you can give the local Grosvenor a miss and get into blackjack, roulette and much more, all with a few taps. While Apple allows such apps, you will not find proper casino apps on the Play Store, but that is just a case of adding a link to the home screen. More proper Casino Apps like William Hill can be found here.

4. Sleep Cycle

We have had this app on our iPhone since the start, and it says a lot that it is still there right now. We can vouch for the quality of this app too as a hectic schedule requires optimal sleep when you get the chance to get some and whatever trickery this app employs, we can say without a doubt that it works. There is a fully functional free version of the app too, although there is always the opportunity for some added extras if you go for the premium version.

5. Sky Sports Score Centre

Now, not every man is into football, but if you are then the Score Centre App from Sky is absolutely essential. Check out match highlights of your favourite team, receive goal notifications and check out all of the latest news around the football world. There are loads of football apps out there, but if you want the premium experience then this is definitely the app on which to find it – although we will give a special mention to Flash Scores too for those that like to be clued in on the latest goings on.

6. Shpock

You have probably heard of Shpock already. We can say with all certainty that we have seen the television adverts often enough and dismissed the app based on the name alone. Then, for whatever reason, we decided to give it a try and if you haven’t already, you really should. Think eBay, but where all of the sellers and their items are a ten-minute drive away at most. This app has reached a point where there are enough sellers on board to find just about anything and the ratings system seems particularly robust too.

7. Hearthstone

William Hill aside, no smartphone is complete without a good old-fashioned game and they do not come much older than card games. With more depth than your conventional mobile gaming fare and no real limitations on how much you can play or for how long, it beats out just about anything with ‘Gods’, ‘Strike’ or ‘Saga’ in the name for sheer enjoyability.

8. Focus Keeper

If we’re going to have time for games, we need to make sure that we get the most out of working hours, and Focus Keeper is virtually the definition of being simple but effective. It uses the much-vaunted Pomodoro Technique and keeps things simple in doing so, breaking down the day and giving you a reason to beat out those distractions that are keeping you from getting things done. It is perhaps the simplest app on this list, but sometimes that’s all you need!

9. SAS Survival Guide

We thought everyone knew about this app already, but clearly that is not the case. Regardless of all of the planning tools and calendars that you will find on your phone by default, let alone the extras on your app store of choice, things do not always go to plan. When an emergency next happens, by all means reach for your phone, but rather than looking to film the strange occurrence, find out exactly what you should be doing. From the local like urban and first aid problems to surviving by the sea and even in polar conditions, this app is the closest that you can get right now to having an expert military force backing you up.

10. Pocket

We have come full circle to finish off the feature, and we are back on the travel theme – although not as you might expect. We are keen readers, as most keen writers are, and there are fewer more lonely feelings than sitting on a long flight with no internet access. We are so used to getting on whenever and wherever we like that a pub without a Wi-Fi hotspot feels like a time warp. Pocket lets you stay live, as long as you put in a little work first, by saving pages, videos and just about anything else for offline viewing. It’s like the internet without the internet! Sure, there is nothing live, so no football scores or chatting, but reading something that you’re interested in probably beats whatever passes for in-flight entertainment on your carrier of choice!

Top 3 Instagram Accounts to Inspire Your Own Fashion Thu, 30 Mar 2017 14:34:20 +0000 A while back, we listed iamgalla

Looking like some sort of divine mix of Ryan Gosling and Chris Hemsworth, Gallagher’s Instagram account is easily one of the most popular out there, with a whopping two million followers. He can be seen looking dapper in a three-piece suit on the streets of New York, rocking a vintage look on an African safari, or even just appearing uber casual with a coat, white t-shirt, and beanie. Gallagher manages to ooze effortless style and sophistication.

W R I T E R S block ????⏳????

A post shared by Adam Gallagher (@iamgalla) on

Steven Onoja – stevenonoja

Onoja has a very distinct style, often combining casual with chic in a way not many can pull off. A beanie with a suit? Why not. Pinstripe suit and mustard-colored bowler hat? Sure. Green jumper with a brown leather jacket? Go for it. His style sense is more like ‘I’m going my own way, deal with it,’ but thankfully he manages to pull it off without being nonsensical – there is a method to it all. Right now Onoja is at 84,000 followers, but it can’t be long before he’s climbing the ranks with fashion like that.

Lucky Blue Smith – luckybsmith

If looks could kill. Lucky Blue Smith (real name) is as stylish as they come and is incredibly similar looking to a young DiCaprio – no problem there. Thankfully, his style is fantastic too, with his account peppered with everything from denim jackets to open-collared shirts to simple striped t-shirts. Lucky Blue Smith has a bright future in the modeling industry, and with 2.9 million followers, also has a lot of fans who think the same.

A post shared by LUCKY BLUE SMITH (@luckybsmith) on

Choosing just three was hard, but hopefully these are enough to inspire your own fashion collection. But while good looks and a cutting-edge style are definitely helpful for a popular Instagram account, they are not everything. There are many things to consider when it comes to gaining more followers for your own Instagram account, so read up, get styled, take photos, and maybe you’ll reach this list one day!

Adidas Originals – Adidas SPEZIAL SS17 Featuring Chronixx Thu, 09 Mar 2017 14:56:29 +0000 Inspired by the rich sportswear heritage of adidas’ own archive, and its Global cultural impact, the adidas SPEZIAL collection has affirmed itself an important and integral part of the adidas Originals output over the course of the last two years. Its premium and carefully curated range of product is inspired by the brand’s past, and geared towards a modern, progressive perspective. At the core of the SPEZIAL range lies the idea of adoption and reinterpretation- to create solid products that are then left up to the individual’s interpretation in their styling.

For SS17 SPEZIAL turns its attention to the parallels between British casual culture and Jamaican reggae culture. Two cultures which, at first glance, seem glaringly different but share a host of commonalities. Linked through a love of music, football and fashion, the two subcultures are paid tribute to in reinvented staples of modern menswear. Military inspired jackets, full tracksuits, knitted polos, iconic 3 stripe trainers and leisure shoes all play a part in nodding towards two distinct cultures, and highlighting our similarities rather than our differences.

Iconic adidas footwear silhouettes like the Atlanta SPZL and Jogger SPZL alongside hybrid designsthat have now become of signature of the Spezial range. The adidas Brisbane leisure shoe is reinvented, a mid-top silhouette featured in the exhibition that launched SPEZIAL comes as a low cut shoe entitled the Garwen SPZL. This season’s footwear carries integral appeal that stretches across both of the world’s that inspired the collection.

SS17 sees the return of adidas SPEZIAL’s premium tracksuit and outerwear executions, the Haslingden jacket being reconfigured to nod to the military aesthetic of casuals and reggae culture. Features such as interchangeable patches on the military jackets have been incorporated as subtle nods to subcultures past, whilst still grounding the collection in the design language of modern adidas product.

Social Media Reveals Oscars 2017 Winners Fri, 24 Feb 2017 12:03:18 +0000 Global media agency Carat has analysed consumer sentiment around the Oscars on social media to determine the ‘audience votes’ ahead of the big announcement being made on 26th February. This has involved aggregating data from Twitter (from the month of February) to understand the public’s favourites to win (and least favourites).

In terms of overall Oscars buzz, 41% of the total occurred on Jan 24th when the various nominees were initially announced. A further 19% occurred over the subsequent 48 hours, meaning that the initial 72 hours accounted for 60% of the total buzz.

One additional spike (four per cent of the total) on 7th February, which appeared to be driven by news that Hidden Figures had surpassed La La Land as the year’s highest grossing Oscar nominee.

Best Film-related buzz

No matter how you slice the data, La La Land is the dominant force in terms of mentions. In terms of overall volume within the category, La La Land accounted for 43% of the total.

On announcement day specifically, La La Land accounted for 45% of the total; excluding announcement day from the data still left the film with a dominating 42% share-of-voice. In terms of sheer buzz, Moonlight and Hidden Figures provide the closest competition for La La Land (accounting for 16% and 15% of the overall buzz respectively).

La La Land

With only two per cent of the total category mentions, Hell or High Water can be considered a longshot.

Despite Casey Affleck sitting comfortably in third place in terms of ‘Best Actor’ buzz, his film Manchester by The Sea is second last in terms of ‘Best Film’ buzz (holding only four per cent of the overall share-of-voice).

Leading Actress Insights

Meryl Streep is the most nominated person for the Oscars in Leading Actress or Supporting Actress ever with 20 nominations. This is taking up the majority of her mentions. This, in conjunction with her Golden Globe speech, which was highly critical of Trump, has caused people to talk about how she should win the Oscar to spite Trump or how her being nominated again disproves Trump’s theory that she is ‘overrated’.

Meryl Streep Golden Globes

Some people disagree with Ruth Negga being nominated over Amy Adams. Isabelle Huppert is evidence that older women can be nominated.

Leading Actor Insights

Casey Affleck has a high amount of negative sentiment in terms of reactions to his nomination due to previous allegation against him. He is, however, expected by many to win due to him already having success this award season. Many are comparing Trump being elected or the end of the world to Casey winning the Oscar.

Some people are interested in the idea of Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield winning their respective categories to reignite their previous romance.

Emma Stone has almost double the mentions of Ryan Gosling (her co-star in La La Land).

Best Director Insights

Barry Jenkins is breaking an Oscar record by being the first black director to be nominated for Best Writing, Best Director and Best Picture. He is the only black director in the Best Director category this year, so along with nominees including Ruth, Viola, Dev and Denzel (amongst others) he is going against the #OscarsSoWhite disappointment of last year.

Barry Jenkins Director of Moonlight

Dennis Villeneuve released a statement when he was nominated for his Oscar saying that Amy Adams also deserved a nomination in the Leading Actor category as she was ‘the soul’ of the film. This caused a lot of controversy around the Amy Adams snub debate. Why did the Oscars ignore her? Is she the new Leonardo DiCaprio (whose Oscar notoriously alluded him)?

Trends In General

#OscarsSoWhite vs. #OscarsNotSoWhite

This year has seen a rise in diversity in Oscar nominations with nominees of all races. However, some people still argue it’s unlikely these people will win given the systemic racism in the industry. This debate was stirred up by Mel Gibson’s nomination for Best Director for Hacksaw Ridge. Lack of diversity was a big issue last year but it is unclear whether this year will see much improvement until the winners are announced. The majority of nominees are still white Americans and Brits.

Meryl vs Trump is a big theme in the Oscars this year. In addition, Trump’s attempt to limit entrance into the US from seven primarily Muslim countries has caused controversy. If the ban had been upheld, one of the directors for Best Foreign Film would have been banned from the ceremony. Now one of the actresses is boycotting the awards as a political statement.

People believe the Oscars is over-glorified and should not be watched. Others are refusing to watch it due to political concerns over Trump and America.

Leonardo DiCaprio

His Oscar win was the best thing to happen in 2016 to some. Some people say they don’t care about this year’s awards as he has already won his Oscar. Some people are comparing him to Amy Adams after she was apparently snubbed this year.

General Insights

The age group of the majority tweeters surrounding the Oscars was 35+.

In the acting and directing categories, women dominated the mentions with Viola Davis (up for Best Supporting Actress) getting 73.7 mentions, Meryl Streep (Best Actress) with 36.6k and Emma Stone (Best Actress) with 21.1k.

Best Picture

La La Land dominated the mentions with over 145k tweets mentioning the film. The majority of the tweets have come from mentions of them becoming the jointly most nominated film at the Oscars, ever. La La Land is up for 14 gongs (tied with All About Eve and Titanic). There were also debates as to whether they should (and probably will) win as well as a few mentions when fellow nominee Hidden Figures surpassed La La Land as the top grossing film this year.

Best Supporting Actor

We observed high volumes of mentions for Dev Patel with tweets being driven by three key topics. Firstly, the potential of him being the first ever Asian Oscar winner in any category. Secondly, his conversation at the Oscars Lunch with fellow nominee Mahershala. And, thirdly, being in the Best Supporting Actor category because he shared the lead role with local child Sunny Pawar.

Best Supporting Actress

The highest number of mentions went to Viola Davis as she became the first black women to be nominated for three Oscars (Fences, The Help and Doubt). There was also a tweet with 2,100 RTs saying Viola should win the Oscar for her famous grabbing-handbag-and-leaving meme. This was the most frequently RT’ed content for Viola that didn’t mention her three Oscar nominations.
