Mainport Design Hotel Rotterdam – Spa With A View

Mainpoort view from the Leuvenhaven

trendy weekend rotterdamThe Mainport Hotel has to be the most luxurious and modern hotel in Rotterdam. This is a brand new 5-star hotel on the edge of the river Maas with views over the Leuvehaven harbour and close proximity to the city centre. The Mainport is a member of design hotels an exclusive club of hotels whereby each member hotel is selected carefully to cater to the needs of modern travellers searching for something unusual and individual. When you walk through the Mainport hotel, you can easily see why they are part of this club which approves only 5 percent of the 400 plus hotels that apply each year.

Designer, Feran Thomassen, created the five-star interiors that make subtle nods to far-flung places, without forgetting that Rotterdam is the hotel’s ‘main’ port. In the lobby, a big map shows where Rotterdam is the Mainport and it shows the routes to far-flung places. Each floor represents a different continent or region with the rooms and wallpapers matching the region. Also, each room on the same floor is unique in its design. It is like you are travelling the world within the hotel.
Lots of hotels come with spas and indoor pools and the Mainport does this really well, but what sets this hotel apart is that they take the concept to some of their rooms. Some rooms have built-in Finnish saunas and some have both a sauna and a Jacuzzi. The Jacuzzi is placed right at the window where you can view the oldest inner harbour of Rotterdam.
I had the opportunity to stay in the Waterfront Spa room, try out the traditional Hamam experience and enjoy dinner at the Mainport, so here is my story of this unforgettable memory.

Lobby

From the moment I entered the Mainport Hotel, I knew it was all about design. The hotel’s attention to detail was pleasing to my eyes. The lobby area is a nice place to retreat and enjoy the views of the inner harbour.

Waterfront Spa Room

I stayed at the Waterfront Spa Room on the 8th floor, which was part of the Orient themed floor. The same floor also has a spa, gym and swimming pool. Once I opened the door to the room, the first thing I noticed was the oversized Jacuzzi in my room, right near the window where I can overlook the harbour. If I did not want to see the harbour, I could turn around and watch TV from the Jacuzzi. The room itself was themed with beautifully printed wallpaper themed around the Orient.

Waterfront Spa Room

The room is 44sqm (473sqft) and has a super comfortable King Bed. I went into the bathroom and I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted with a private sauna and a mirror TV.

The room has artwork specific to its theme walls, which, in my case was the Orient section. The minibar was well stocked and of course, there is the Nespresso machine, which I see now in most hotels. The room had a large desk to work on, but who wants to when you have a jacuzzi and sauna in your room?

Spa & Gym

After I explored the room it was time to explore the Spa, Swimming Pool and Gym also on the 8th floor. The Mainport hotel has split the area into two. There is Club H2O which revolves around the swimming pool and you have to wear swimwear in the sauna, and there is Spa heaven where traditional naked sauna rules apply.

Spa Heaven & Hamam Treatment

Spa Heaven on the 8th floor is a sanctuary of wellbeing in the midst of the city. It features a Finnish panorama sauna, a Turkish steam room, a Hamam mecca, 2 treatment rooms and a lounge area for general relaxation. After spending some time in the steam room to get my skin soft, I went for the traditional Hamam massage. This massage, which was done on a heated stone table, involved a lot of scrubbing. The hot water on your back was awesome and the soap technique was like sleeping in silk sheets. I felt clean and relaxed and the massage was done very gently, unlike my real Turkish Hamam experience I had 20 years ago that was so painful I can still remember it. After the 1 hour treatment, I went back to my room to enjoy my private Jacuzzi.

Club H2O and Gym

The views were great at Club H20 and the swimming pool was perfect for a relaxing swim. The gym was small but the views and the lighting sets the mood, no pain, no gain here. I loved the huge salt tub to scrub that dead skin of mine, my skin felt amazing in fact my whole body did.

Restaurant & Bar

After I relaxed more in my room, it was time to check out the bar area and the restaurant. The Cocktail bar on the Rocks was a perfect place to enjoy a cocktail before dinner. It had also a nice outside terrace where you can sit on warm sunny days to soak up spectacular water views. Unlucky for me it was autumn and cold.

The Restaurant Down Under is where I went next. It is themed around Sydney where international cuisines meet from East to West. We were given its signature bite-size menu. This way we could try a lot of tastes, tapas-style with small food portions. The presentation was beautiful and the food was fresh and tasty. You can see what I ate below, it all looks a bit purple due to the mood lighting in the restaurant.

Breakfast

A wealth of healthy choices was available for breakfast and the presentation is just marvellous. If you have to dash off, then they have a take away option available, but I was here to indulge. The staff were really sweet and I had a great view, a perfect way to start the day. I’m loving the idea that Cava, let alone Champagne, is being served early in the morning, it’s a tough job but someone has to taste it.

Conclusion

As you can see from the photos, I had a great stay and experience at the Mainport hotel. Rotterdam itself is a fantastic destination, with the whole city renewing itself around architecture and design. In the middle of it all is the Mainport design hotel, centrally located for all attractions Rotterdam has to offer. The hotel offers a unique experience in design and art but to top it off, it has the Spa experience in your room. If you want the ultimate romantic getaway for a weekend, this is the place to stay. The staff are professional, helpful and friendly and in my opinion, greatly dressed as well. I leave this review with a few photos of the staff uniform.
