Mental Health and the Taboo Signs

Real-life fashion experiences from real-life men! How do you get to the truth about what men really think about fashion and mental health issues? Simply get them around the family dinner table, relaxed, after a few beers when they are really enjoying themselves, then fire away with the questions. If you want opinions from across the board try asking a musician, come electrician, a builder, a professional sportsman and a postman.  The cross-section of society represented by my sons and husband, their age groups and experiences vary and “voila” there you have it! Experiences from men leading real lives!

The scene is set for question 1 as I put it to the group.  Men’s mental health, a very controversial subject, possibly taboo but the men unanimously agreed, if you are happy with who you are, and have a purpose in life, you might be less likely to look for externals to make you happy such as trying to be someone else by looking a certain way, or following certain brands, to money, alcohol, drugs or extra marital relationships to make you feel better internally.

Signs the man you know might be experiencing problems

  • Lack of energy
  • Irritability
  • Anxiety
  • Indecision
  • Mood Swings
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Angry outbursts
  • Substance abuse
  • Sexual dysfunction; even
  • Suicidal thoughts

Generally, guys find it harder to talk about their feelings as it is often seen as a sign of weakness, let’s help our men to open up, by understanding where they come from and start listening (I mean really listening) to them in a non-judgemental way, and of course, teaching the younger generation it is ok to express what they feel, and in fact, it is a necessary part of a healthy happy lifestyle.

So what can you do if you are feeling down or even depressed?

If you are suffering from any of the above symptoms and you feel it is affecting your general wellbeing, perhaps it is time to get some help, life coaches are “on trend” these days, it’s time that ordinary guys start investing in their mental health as many great athletes, actors or other professionals.
