Cranbrook Academy and Educational Community (Bloomfield Hills, MI) – Built 1920’s

  • Architect: Eliel Saarinen, Eero Saarinen,
  • Cranbrook, close to where I grew up in Michigan, and holds a special place. When thinking of it, I recall Gaston Bachelard’s book “The Poetics of Space”.  It’s a rare place that triggers all your senses – the buildings, gardens and artistic anomalies disguised in the masonry. The Saarinens laid a great foundation here with so many architects, artisans and craftsman’s contributing. A place I will always revisit in my trips back home.
