You can’t talk of Cabaret or French music without mentioning Moulin rouge in the same sentence. After 1899, Paris was experiencing a moment of peace after wars, and the desire for a good life gave birth to an era of artistic renaissance. During this time, several artistic hubs popped up, but at the heart of Montmartre was the unique Moulin Rouge. The music theatre has stood the test of time and upheld its relevance up to this age.

This is mostly attributed to the cabaret show, which features topless, sexy girls dancing can-can. The entertainment segment keeps drawing thousands of visitors to the theatre annually just to get first-hand experience.

What to Expect at the Moulin Rouge

There’re 3 shows per night that run like an oiled machine. Once there, the staff is very welcoming and efficient at directing you to your seat. Each show runs for 1 ½ hours, but the moment you are spotted taking pictures or videos, the same staff that walked you in will gladly show you the door.

The themes switch from the history of Paris to romance and the level of detail in the costumes is something to behold.

At the climax of the show, you will get entertained by the famous can-can dance, which adds a touch of thrill to your whole experience in Paris. During the show, the look of the stage keeps changing, and props keep popping from left, right and centre. If you thought you were only getting treated to views of nude girls, then you are in for a shock because giant snakes and water are part of the show.

Besides dances, there’re comedy sessions in between and acrobatic acts from a duo you are likely to confuse with aliens due to their flexibility. So, if you are not into topless dance shows, this will be your time. In a nutshell, there is something for everyone.

How to Attend the Moulin Rouge Shows

Of course, you will need tickets first, but they don’t come cheap. Before travelling to Paris, go to the Moulin Rouge website and keep your fingers crossed that you are lucky enough to find available spots for that particular day you plan to visit. You have three tiers of Moulin Rouge tickets to choose from.

The VIP tickets give you access to premium services accompanied by champagne, DVD, dinner, and extra souvenirs. They cost around 200€. In the middle, there’re the dinner and show tickets, and at the low end, they’re the regular tickets which start at around 80€.

Keep in mind there’re 3 shows per night, and the prices are subject to change. Throughout the years, the shows tend to change, so if you were there some years back, revisiting Paris for a different experience might be a fantastic plan.

Once in Paris take a bus to the Blanche metro station, and as you alight from the metro you will see a red windmill, enough sign that you are at the right place.

Is Moulin Rouge Worth your Money?

Sure, the tickets don’t come that cheap but the food, drinks and thrilling dances, especially can-can are worth every penny. Visiting the theatre needs to be on your to-do list the next time you visit Paris.
